Oh my, where do we start with white? So many of us love the pure simplicity of white, but how do we choose the right white? I often hear people say, I just want to paint my house white. Do they always get it right? Unfortunately the answer is no. Just take a look at the Dulux whites and neutrals fandeck, it has 160 colours to choose from. That's not counting Resene, Porters, Taubmans, the list goes on.
So where do we start when choosing the right white for your home?
No two whites are the same, it will pick up other colours. For example if a white has a pink undertone it will pick up the pinks in your home. Have a look at what colours already exist in your house; in your furniture, the colour of your cabinetry, the colour of your flooring. You may find there is a hidden colour that already exists in your home.
Next, go to your local paint store and choose an array of sample colours from the collections you can take home with you. Don't be fussy, just pick an assortment of different whites from different companies. You'll be surprised when you put them all together how different the whites really are. You're eye will pick up a base colour. Whether its a grey/blue base, green, pink or yellow/cream, your eye will see the difference.
Once you narrow down your favourite whites, buy small sample pots and paint each colour on a separate piece of cardboard. Place these around your home and watch the colour change throughout the day. Before you know it you'll see your favourite white!
