I often walk into a newly renovated property and people say to me, "I feel there's something missing". That something is texture. So why is texture so important? You don't just see beautiful things, you feel them. By adding the dimension of texture you are heightening your senses to the surrounds allowing both your eyes and your touch to grasp the beauty of your home.
You may feel a little over whelmed with the idea of texture. Where should I start? Well, here are just a few tips that will help you discover the amazing world texture:
1. Say yes to rugs!
Rugs are a great way to add tactility to your floor, transforming the feeling of your room from a cold hard space to a soft welcoming home. Rugs can be used in living and dining areas, bedrooms and hallways. To choose the right sized rug for your space make sure you measure your room, you can't go wrong with a large rug however if it is too small it can look out of place. Always remember when placing a rug under furniture to at least have the front legs on the rug and don't forget they look fabulous layered!
2. Choose natural fibres.
Just like choosing your favourite outfit to wear on a night out, choose fabrics that feel great. You will find natural fibres work best. Think about how you feel when you wear a beautiful linen dress or a gorgeous woollen jumper to keep you warm in winter, natural fibres will have the same affect on your home as they do on your skin.
3. Utilise pattern.
Pattern is a great way to add dimension and texture to the look and feel of your home. It doesn't have to be bold and bright, it can be smooth and subtle allowing the eye to be drawn to the detail of the pattern. Patterns can be used in soft furnishings such as cushions and bed linen or it can be added to walls through artwork or the type of cladding you choose. You can even have your tiler create patterns when laying tiles in your new bathroom.
4. Always add greenery
I cannot get enough of indoor plants. If there is something missing in your home and you don't want to spend much, add an indoor pot plant. Bringing nature indoors will soften the look of any home and give an instant boost to its appearance and feel.
If you are someone who doesn't feel like you can't keep a plant alive, don't forget fresh flowers or foliage from the garden add the same amazing feeling to any space.
5. It doesn't have to be new.
I think this is where new renovations or builds sometimes go wrong. When everything is perfectly new it can sometimes feel heartless. By bringing in loved items that have meaning or you brought from your previous place or a second hand store down the road will add character and charm. It's the element of imperfection and the texture it adds through its roughness that will relax the home you live in.
These are just a few of my favourite tips for adding texture and creating a feeling of warmth and relaxation to any home. If you have any questions don't forget you can subscribe to our website or follow us on Instagram and Facebook. We are more than happy to help!
